SELF-CARE THROUGH SLEEP
The need for self-care has reached an all-time high due to the sustained impact of the pandemic. The stresses and uncertainties brought on by the quarantine has affected every one’s mental state, since leisure activities in communal locations are still being regulated.
Those who are constantly weary may find difficulties sleeping as stress can exacerbate pre-existing sleeping disorders. Here are some tips that can help support a good night’s sleep:
Skip the after-dinner coffee.
Prof. Renata Riha, from the Department of Sleep Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, suggests that “while drinking coffee early in the day can help support alertness and concentration levels, especially when sleep patterns are disturbed; decreasing intake six hours before bedtime may help reduce its impact on sleep.”
Find time for fitness.
It may be challenging to engage in sports these days, but doing exercises at home can help you fall asleep faster. An article in the National Sleep Foundation website states that “moderate-to-vigorous exercise can increase sleep quality for adults by reducing sleep onset – or the time it takes to fall asleep – and decrease the amount of time they lie awake in bed during the night.” It adds that physical activity can help alleviate daytime sleepiness and, for some people, reduce the need for sleep medications.
Be mindful of your working hours.
If you are using your bedroom as a home office, unplug your laptop and commit to cutting off work at a certain hour in order to relax and enjoy other activities, such as; bonding with the family or binge-watching your favorite Netflix series.
Make your bedroom conducive for sleeping.
Make sure that your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet. If possible, keep your work area out of this space. Avoid clutter and use this time at home to transform your room into a sanctuary.
Choose the right mattress.
It’s impossible to get a good night’s sleep if your mattress is not giving you the right support and comfort. The wrong bed can keep you tossing and turning all night, preventing you from finding a comfortable position. A mattress that’s too soft can initially provide comfort but actually lacks the proper support, leading to back pain and other orthopedic problems. On the other hand, a stiff mattress won’t be flexible enough to adapt to your specific body type.
As the leading mattress manufacturer in the world, Sealy Posturepedic® provides absolute quality conformance, unbeatable comfort and unparalleled support. Its revolutionary patented spring technology, perfected over a span of 140 years, is the most advanced spring system within the mattress industry.
